Incorporated in 1971, the South Brunswick Historical Society has maintained a presence across the community after a study group recommended by the township committee found the need for an organization “dedicated to the identification and possible preservation of historic sites and monuments, to the collection and preservation of deeds, records, photographs and literature relative to the township…” (Central Post – January 1974).
The first historical society included William Baker, President; Edward Visinski, Vice President; Ralph Dowgin, Treasurer; Mrs. Rightmire, Recording Secretary; Mrs. M.A. Sprague, Corresponding Secretary; and the Trustees, Raymond Baker, William Voorhees, and W.C. Krueger (Local History Files – History, General Local – South Brunswick Historical Society – B25 F12).
Originally incorporated within the township and the State of New Jersey, the Society became more informal in the 1990s. Managed by the Township Historian and Local History Librarian at the South Brunswick Public Library, the Society engages with South Brunswick’s local history as well as national and international topics. Through monthly presentations, workshops, and other events, the South Brunswick Historical Society aims to educate and inspire people in and around the community. All are welcome!
